Themes

The world economy is experiencing the biggest crisis since 1929. China is no exception but has her unique opportunities and challenges. How does the rapid urbanization in China make a difference in dealing with the economic downturn? Is urban development a victim of this crisis or is it a source of solutions? How is job creation the most important priority of China’s big cities, which have become significant economies in their own right? How are the various aspects of urban life influenced by this economic downturn? How may urban housing, transportation, environment, regeneration, planning and policy contribute to the recovery of the economy? What are roles for the public, academics, NGOs, industries, urban managers, national goverment and public media? China Planning Network has undertaken to organize the CPN Four Way Dialogue to bring together these diverse groups to brain storm on these questions.

Alive Broadcast

51 public media in China are partnering with CPN to publicize the CPN China Week 2009 (full list). Four mainstream Chinese online portals: www.sina.com.cn, www.cctv.com.cn, www.china.com.cn and www.ifeng.com will broadcast alive this CPN Four Way Dialogue.

About CPN
China Planning Network (CPN) was established in 2004 and has since advanced from simply an academic interest group to become an independent voice that affects the education, research, practice and policies in China’s urban development. CPN has moved forward on its mission to systematically introduce western knowledge and experiences to China and more importantly CPN has started pursuing its vision of cultivating China's own discourse on urban development. As MIT President Susan Hockfield wrote in 2006: "Through the efforts of the China Planning Network, MIT and the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, continue to lead the world to bring the advanced knowledge on urban planning and development to bear on China's urbanization challenges."
